Racism still a mixed bag as another Martin Luther King Day approaches

As another Martin Luther King Day approaches, racial incidents show little signs of easing up.

A New York weatherman was fired for saying "Martin Luther Coon Day" on the air. An Uber driver was recorded using racial slurs. Black youth hockey and lacrosse players often have racial slurs hurled at them, even in non-Southern states such as Pennsylvania and Maryland. The SPLC regularly documents incidents of racial hatred.

The positive side of this is that direct attempts to address the situations are usually made fairly quickly these days. It's not like in the 1960s, when civil rights leaders like King and others faced threats to their lives on a daily basis.

There are disparate views on how far we have come since the 1960s. One survey shows 42 percent of black Americans think race relations have gotten worse, and only 29 percent said they had become better. Meanwhile, 48 percent of white respondents think race relations are better, compared to 26 percent getting worse.

Bottom line is we still have a ways to go to live in a truly colorblind society.
